Mignolet Contract Deal – Not all doom

The recent contract extension of Simon Mignolet brought much surprise and debate amongst Livepool fans. I was initially surprised at the length of the Belgian’s new deal being at 5 years. Given that his performances of recent have much to be desired, it would seem strange at this time to offer Mignolet a long term deal given his inconsistency.

It is easy to forget that last season Mignolet came joint second in the Golden Glove awards just one behind Manchester City’s Joe Hart. In the current 2015-2016 season he has kept 7 clean sheets which is two behind Arsenal’s Petr Cech.

Of course whilst it may be the case of keeping Mignolet at the club long term, it could also be the forward looking option. A new contract will help keep the value of the Belgian and reduce the chances of the club losing the goalkeeper for free. Liverpool have had their fingers burnt before when it comes to seeing players go on a free, whether they were wanted or not.

One thing I do know is that I do hope Bogdan disappears at the end of his contract. Not sure if Klopp would like him to be staying around for a while.
